Suspected West High School burglar hits head in 13-foot fall running from police

A Torrance man suspected of breaking into vending machines on the West High School campus suffered a serious head injury today when he jumped over a rail and fell 13 feet onto the concrete below while running from police, authorities said.
The man was one of three suspects police took to jail in connection with the crime that netted about $100 in change, Torrance police Sgt. Robert Watt said.
A school maintenance worker contacted police about 3:40 a.m. when he spotted the break-in about on surveillance video. The worker could see two men breaking into a vending machine outside a cafeteria south of the football field, Watt said.
Police officers soon confronted the campus intruders as dozens of coins were forced from the machine, Watt said. The burglars ran. One of the men jumped a railing from a campus area that overlooks the school’s practice fields off Henrietta Street. He fell to the ground below, landing on a paved walkway that leads to the grass.
“It appears the suspect was not familiar with the layout of the campus,” Watt said.
The man appeared to be unconscious after the fall. Officers quickly handcuffed him and called paramedics. He was taken to a hospital, where he was reported in critical condition, police said.
The other man, a Wilmington resident, ran north and was quickly surrounded and arrested. A woman from Carson also was located on campus and arrested.
They were held on suspicion of commercial burglary. Their names were not immediately available.
School officials canceled “zero period,” which begins early on campus, to allow police officers to finish their investigation. School otherwise resumed its normal schedule, Watt said.
Officers recovered about $100 in coins, Watt said.
