Weekly Crime Report, Pedestrian Accident and CoronaVirus Information

  Fatal Traffic Collision, 24200 Crenshaw Blvd, Torrance ( Crossroads ) Wednesday, February 26, 2020, 8 p.m.     Torrance Police Officers responded to the 24200 block of Crenshaw Boulevard regarding a traffic collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. The preliminary investigation reveals the driver of a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling north on Crenshaw Boulevard. While traveling north on Crenshaw Boulevard, the Jeep Cherokee struck a pedestrian walking east across Crenshaw Boulevard. The unidentified pedestrian was treated by Torrance Fire Department personnel but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The driver of the Jeep, a 55-year-old male resident of Torrance, was not injured. Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in this collision.   This report is for Sunday, February 16, 2020 through Saturday, February 22, 2020. Explosion and Fire at the Marathon Refinery in Carson

 City News Service report  | UPDATED:  February 25, 2020 at 11:32 p.m. A fire erupted Tuesday night at the Marathon Petroleum Refinery in Carson and at least one explosion was reported. The fire broke out about 10:50 p.m., at the refinery, which is located at 2350 E. 223rd St., between Wilmington Avenue and Alameda Street and south of the San Diego (405) Freeway. What Is Going In the Old Costco Site?

  On Tuesday, February 25th, the Torrance City Council will consider an appeal of the Planning Commission approval of three light industrial buildings at the old Costco site at 2751 Skypark Drive. The proposed project comprises a light industrial use that would generate approximately 125 to 157 daily heavy-duty truck trips within the region. The proposal also includes 371 parking slots for a warehouse project and 651 parking slots for a manufacturing project.    Bridge Development Partners is the applicant.  Bridge Development Partners also wants to build a warehouse for an e-commerce company (identity not revealed but rumored to be an Amazon fulfillment center) to receive goods by large trucks and distribute them using smaller vans, a kind of “last mile” terminal operation in Upland, CA . At the Planning Commission, the question was asked if this project, in Torrance, was going to include a fulfillment center.  The question was not answered.   Links

This report is for Sunday, February 9, 2020 through Saturday, February 15, 2020. There were 46 incidents on the Torrance Police Department Weekly Crime Log. RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES There was 1 in North Torrance. 2/9/2020  4:40 pm to 5:29 pm   2400 Block 181st St Window smashed for entry and drill, duffel and clothes stolen. AUTO BURGLARIES There were 10 in Torrance and 1 in Southeast Torrance. 2/12/2020 9 pm to 2/13/2020 6 am  2300 Block Sepulveda Blvd Unknown means used to enter vehicle.  Tools, radio and wire stolen. Windows were smashed in 4 vehicles, 3 unknown means of entry, and 1 each of pried door lock, punched door lock and unlocked vehicle. Items stolen included third row seat, child car seat, stroller, new garments, laptop, charger, medical records, registration, subwoofer, backpacks, wallet, laptop, chargers, notebooks, jewelry, controller, cell phone, cash, bank cards, business cards, and medications.   This report is for Sunday, January 26, 2020 through Saturday, February 1, 2020. 52 incidents on the Torrance Police Department Weekly Crime Log at: https://www.torranceca.gov/home/showdocument?id=58103   RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES There was 1 incident in the 3400 Block of Maricopa St on January 27, 2020 at 4:07 a.m. in which delivered parcels were taken out of an apartment mailroom.   AUTO BURGLARIES There were 16 in Torrance including 2 in Southeast Torrance. 7 vehicles were unlocked, 3 windows smashed and 4 instances of unknown entry to the vehicles. January 26   9:30 p.m. to January 27 9:30 a.m.  23200 Block Falena Avenue 2 vehicles were burglarized.  Keys, insurance documents, tool, CD and documents were taken from one unlocked vehicle and a wallet from another unlocked vehicle.     AUTO THEFT There were 6 vehicles stolen in Torrance and none in Southeast Torrance.   THEFT There were 21 incidents in Torrance and 2 in Southeast Torrance.

Pickleball Courts Proposed for Sur La Brea Park

  The City of Torrance Parks and Recreation Commission will be hosting a discussion regarding the addition of Pickleball lines to one of the Tennis Courts at Sur La Brea Park. This discussion is a result of continuing requests from the public for Pickleball Courts in Torrance. The proposal will be to add over stripping to one of the two courts, leaving a dedicated Tennis Court. The second court would remain a tennis court, however,  it would double as 2 or 4 Pickleball courts. The options for discussion would be the addition of 2 or 4 Pickleball courts, as well as which of the two courts would best serve the park users.
