800 STUDENT HIGH SCHOOL PROPOSED ON WALNUT STREET

There is a movement to offer Los Angeles Unified School District a portion of Lomita Park as a site for an 800 student high school.

The plan calls for the east portion of Lomita Park - approximately 2 acres backing on to Walnut Street to be used for the new high school. Additional acreage would come from the Los Angeles County Maintenance Yard and the City of Lomita Maintenance Yard, both located on Walnut Street.

This new high school would impact Southeast Torrance residents directly. The main entrance and drop off area would be on Walnut Street. The homes on the east side of Walnut Street are within Torrance city limits. In addition to students, parents and clerical staff vehicles and possibly school buses would be impacting Walnut Street.

Information obtained by SETHA indicates approximately 450 students from Lomita attend Narbonne High School so another 350 students from outside Lomita would be required to meet the 800 pupil goal. If they came from Harbor City, Harbor Gateway, Wilmington or east, Walnut Street would not be the only street to be impacted. Cabrillo, 234th, 235th, Schilling Court, 236th, 238th, 242nd, 242nd Place, 243rd, 244th and 245th streets could also be used as cut through streets to reach the new high school.

Keep 7:00PM, December 3, 2007, open on your calendar for an important meeting on this new high school. Additional details will be forthcoming by Friday, November 16th.
