Torrance police shoot, kill woman at end of vehicle pursuit
By Larry Altman, Daily Breeze
A woman driving erratically through Torrance was shot to death by police
Monday afternoon when she drove straight at officers, forcing them to jump
out of her way, and slammed into a patrol car, authorities said.
At least two officers opened fire on the slow-moving car at about 2:30 p.m.
at Sepulveda Boulevard and Cabrillo Avenue. One officer suffered minor
injuries, Torrance police Sgt. Paul Kranke said.
Police officers spotted the motorist shortly after receiving a call of a
reckless and possibly drunken driver near Arlington and Post avenues, Kranke
said. Officers tried to stop the four-door sedan, but the driver continued
on.
“The driver was driving erratically on the wrong side of the road, almost
hit several vehicles, had traffic collision damage and the air bag
deployed,” Kranke said.
An officer bumped the vehicle to get the driver to stop next to a Chevron
station. The driver then tried to escape and drove forward toward several
officers, Kranke said.
A cellphone video posted online showed the car lurching forward and turning
into a gas pump as officers fired several shots. The car came to rest
against a pole next to a gas pump.
“She drove right at the officers head on,” Kranke said. “She drove straight
at the car. She actually rammed one of the police cars.”
The car’s windows were smashed out and the doors showed bullet holes.
Torrance police officers reportedly were following the car before the
confrontation occurred, police said.
Police closed Sepulveda from Border to Arlington avenues. Cabrillo was
closed between Middlebrook Road and Santa Fe Avenue.
Officers pulled the driver from the car and reportedly performed CPR on her
before she was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. No
information about her identity has been released.
