Weekly Crime Report for 6/14 ti 6/20, 2020 and Coronavirus Graphics

 This report is for Sunday, June 14, 2020 through Saturday, June 20, 2020. There are 65 incidents in the Torrance Police Department Weekly Crime Log at: https://www.torranceca.gov/home/showdocument?id=59715   RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES There were two in Torrance and none in Southeast Torrance. One in North Torrance where a ladder was used to access a second story balcony with unlocked door for entry and steal a tile saw. One daytime burglary in the Riviera where a open door was forced for entry, property ransacked and purse, jewelry, watches and pillowcase were stolen.   AUTO BURGLARIES There were 14 in Torrance and 1 in Southeast Torrance. 6/18 5 pm to 6/19 5 am  23300 Block Arlington Av Suspect entered unlocked vehicle, ransacked and took documents, light bulbs and lumbar support pad.   5 vehicles were unlocked, 4 vehicles unknown means of entry, 3 vehicles with smashed windows and 1 vehicle with pried door handle for entry.   Items stolen included ea

Torrance City Manager Announces His Retirement

  Dear Mayor and Members of the Torrance City Council:   I have decided to retire from my position of City Manager at the end of September in this remarkable year of 2020.   Thanks for these 50-plus years that you have allowed me to serve this City.  I so much appreciate the Mayors and Councilmembers I have reported to, and the managers and Torrance City employees I have been so honored to work with.   This has been a great and rewarding career for me.  I hope my service has helped Torrance meet its goals of being a special City to live and work in.   As I prepare for my retirement, I am pleased that I leave an organization which is led by a group of very capable department heads and managers, and that it has a compliment of City employees who are public servants truly committed to serving our residents and business community.   I feel very confident in the future of the organization I leave.     Respectfully and sincerely,   LeRoy J.   Lomita Fireworks Show The City of Lomita Founder’s Day, Saturday,  June 27, 2020, has been canceled due to COVID-19 and there will NOT be any fireworks show this year.   Hobby Lobby Update Hobby Lobby will move in the former location of Toys R Us on the northwest corner of Hawthorne Blvd and Sepulveda Blvd. Here is the 6/23/2020 update from Hobby Lobby on the status of the new store.   “Hobby Lobby has signed a lease for a new store in Torrance, CA, and we look forward to coming to your area. Sepulveda Blvd Traffic Alert

Sun, Jun 21 at 5:58 PM   The Sepulveda Blvd Rehabilitation (Hawthorne Blvd to Western Avenue) Project bids have been extended to close on Wednesday, July 1, 2020.  However, underground pipeline  repair work will start on Monday, June 22, 2020 during daylight hours.    Westbound Sepulveda Blvd. will be reduced to one lane of traffic just west of Arlington Ave. from June 22 to approximately August 22 due to pipeline repairs. Amazon Coming to Torrance

 The Planning Commission, on June 17. 2020  approved a modification to allow an Amazon Hub Retail/Service Center to use the existing old Costco building at 2751 Skypark Drive instead of demolishing the structure and building three new warehouses.   It was determined that the project will not produce a hazard occasioned by unusual volume or character of traffic or the congregating of large numbers of people or vehicles.    Prior to the building permit being issued,  the applicant shall enter into negotiations for the formation of, participate in, or annex into, a Community Financing District (CFO) to pay for a portion of the additional costs for ongoing City services, including but not limited to, road maintenance, park maintenance, lighting, and public safety, to the satisfaction of the Community Development and Finance Directors; (Planning/Finance).   Links the details of the project: https://www.torranceca.gov/Home/ShowDocument?id=59563 https://www.torran

3 Burglary Suspects Arrested in Hermosa Beach

Last night, June 2, 2020,  an alert resident in the 400 Block of 2nd St in Hermosa Beach noticed three subjects pull up in a rental van, wait for a car to enter the gated parking garage and then saw them follow the car in before the gate closed. He went for a closer look and saw them using bolt cutters to cut a lock off of a bike. The resident immediately called 9-1-1, Hermosa Beach Police  and gave a great description of all three subjects and their van. HBPD Officers arrived quickly and detained all three subjects, who were in possession of stolen property including Amazon boxes , Bikes and mail from surrounding areas. In addition, they found stolen property from a burglary that just occurred a few hours earlier in Redondo Beach. All three subjects were arrested and booked into the HBPD Jail (and additionally had narcotics on them).
