A Message from the Hermosa Beach Police Department on Catalytic Converter Thefts

Neighboring Cities are experiencing an increase in Catalytic Converter thefts. You may remember a couple months ago a crew hit Hermosa and got caught (4 subjects arrested). Your Officers are diligently checking residential streets (especially during night shift) and we thought we would share a couple of tips in preventing you from becoming a victim of this ($2k repair average) crime.
1) When possible, park in well lit areas.
2) If you can, park in a garage or carport (Limits the amount of side clearance the criminals have to work on your car).
3) Have a qualified mechanic weld the catalytic converter to your vehicle’s frame.
4) Calibrate your car alarm to go off when it detects vibration.
Thieves are more interested in vehicles with high ground clearance (trucks and SUVs) which make it easier for them to slide underneath and (using a saws all) remove it in literally less than two minutes.
As always, please call us if you suspect suspicious activity. If you see something, say something.
