Report from the Palos Verdes Estates Police (PVEPD)
Yesterday at about 12:29 pm, PVEPD received calls regarding a major traffic collision. Officers arrived 2 minutes later (yes two minutes!) and quickly assessed the scene. While doing so, the officers immediately noticed the smell of natural gas and saw a water leak. Those utilities were shut down quickly, because that could have caused a huge explosion and catastrophic damage. Los Angeles County Fire Department (including Urban Search and Rescue) arrived to medically evaluate the driver and examine the structure. Thankfully, the driver was the only person who needed medical treatment.
To add to the chaotic scene, our officers believed the driver was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and he refused to submit to a chemical test, thus officers obtained a search warrant to withdraw a blood sample.
Furthermore, Torrance Police Department let us know they were looking for a Jeep that had been involved in a hit and run in their City, so they also responded to assist us and investigate their crime. A PVE Building Inspector later arrived on scene and the house had to be red tagged. Our officers offered the residents assistance through Red Cross, but fortunately they had good friends nearby that they stayed with.
