A 21-year-old man stabbed and critically injured his father as they were driving through Torrance on Friday afternoon before good Samaritans, including one armed with a piece of lumber, sprung into action and subdued the attacker, police said.
Officers responded to a report of a stabbing and car crash about 2:20 p.m. at Artesia Boulevard and Prairie Avenue, Torrance Police Department Sgt. Alex Martinez said.
They encountered a vehicle that had crashed into a residential property, along with a man suffering from stab wounds.
Paramedics took the injured man to a hospital in critical condition, Martinez said. He was expected to survive.
Police released no information regarding the circumstances of the stabbing.
Nearby resident Megan Kiachko said she first noticed what she presumed to merely be a minor traffic accident in which a minivan rear-ended another car, then continued rolling slowly into a fence.
The driver and a passenger got out of the minivan, she said.
“They were fighting, and (the passenger) was stabbing the driver,”according to Kiachko. “I was just panicked. I didn’t even know what to do.”
Numerous passing vehicle saw what was happening and came to a halt.
“A bunch of guys got out of their cars and started tackling (the stabber),” Kiachko said. “One of those people went to his car and got a two-by-four and hit the guy who was stabbing the driver.”
“There was a lot of screaming,” the witness added.”There was mayhem.”
Kiachko added that the police arrived “amazingly quickly.”
Police determined the victim’s 21-year-old son had stabbed him. He was taken into custody.
His identity was not available Friday afternoon.
