South Coast AQMD and City of Torrance Meeting on the ExxonMobil Refinery.
01/26/16 City of Torrance staff met with the Executive Director and Deputy Executive Director of South Coast AQMD last week to discuss the study of alternative catalysts for HF alkylation units. Upon further discussion and reflection, AQMD has determined that the study should be fully conducted and funded by AQMD, with briefings to the City as the study progresses.
City of Torrance staff will work closely with AQMD as to findings as the study proceeds over the next six months.
The study will specifically address researching and evaluating catalyst options, and commercially available alternatives to MHF, and include
- Sulfuric Acid
- MHF
- Solid Acid Catalyst
- Ionic Liquid
- Fixed Bed
- Slurry catalyst
- Soluble catalyst and
- Solid Onium hydrogen fluoride catalyst
- MHF
- Solid Acid Catalyst

- Slurry catalyst

- Solid Onium hydrogen fluoride catalyst
The evaluation will include, at a minimum the following:
- Efficiency and effectiveness
- Commercial availability

- Storage requirements
- Cost and life
