The Torrance Police Department has been investigating a significant increase in acts of vandalism to local businesses in the past 3 months. In these cases, suspects have been breaking the front windows of local businesses along a number of major thoroughfares in the City, with a heavy concentration on businesses located on Hawthorne Boulevard, Pacific Coast Highway and Sepulveda Boulevard. In a number of these crimes, the suspects have used a BB/pellet guns to shoot out the front windows of the business. Several businesses have been the target of this vandalism on multiple occasions. The Torrance Police Department is reminding all business owners, both those of victim businesses and those adjacent to victim businesses, to remain vigilant and we are asking them to review all of their surveillance video footage to help identify the suspects. Recent Identity Theft Scams via Unsolicited Phone Calls The Torrance Police Department has been receiving a number of phone calls and emails regarding a recent increase in suspicious unsolicited phone calls from various “creditors” wherein the “creditors” ask for the victim’s personal account information. On 16 February 2009 a Torrance resident received a phone call from an unknown subject who identified himself as a member of the “South Bay Finance Club”. The person on the phone explained that his Visa credit card was being compromised right now and he needed to suspend the card immediately. The resident said he was not thinking and provided the caller his credit card number and also provided his PIN and other personal information needed to access his account. On 17 February 2009 another Torrance resident received a phone call from an unknown subject who identified himself as a “South Bay Credit Union” representative. On Sunday, May 3, 2009, the historic ex-Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751 Steam Locomotive will make another trip from Los Angeles Union Station to San Diego and return. The trip will feature an open-door baggage car and three passenger cars built for the famous California Zephyr. PURSE THEFTS - GABLE HOUSE BOWL 01 OCT 08 Since September 4, 2008, there have been four separate incidents wherein female victims bowling at the GABLE HOUSE BOWL, located at 22501 Hawthorne Blvd., have had their purses stolen. Immediately following the theft on September 15th, the suspect used the victim's credit card at a nearby grocery store. The thefts have occurred weekday and weekend nights, primarily between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male adult in his 40s with dark hair, wearing prescription glasses. He was also in the company of a Hispanic female juvenile who was probably sitting in the stroller believed to have been used to conceal the stolen purse while inside the Gable House Bowl. The Electronic Vote By Mail Application for the November 4th General Election is now available on the Los Angeles County Registrar's website, www.lavote.net . Go to the right side of the home page to Online Services and click on Apply for Vote By Mail Ballot. You do not have to list your home or work phone numbers in the application. It is optional. If you include your phone numbers then it becomes public record and you may receive political phone calls. Be sure to print a copy of the confirmation number issued after you submit your application.
